How to Play eFootball Offline on Mobile, Step by Step
You are about to get on a flight, or your data is nearly gone, and you want a match. Here is the honest truth first: eFootball on your phone is not a fully offline game, but its Exhibition mode plays offline perfectly well once you set it up. The setup takes ten minutes while you still have internet. Skip it, and you will be staring at a server error with no way to fix it until you land. Do it once, properly, and offline matches are yours whenever you want them.
Why the phone version is fussy
The mobile app treats your account as the centre of everything. When it starts, it checks in with Konami's servers, confirms your data, and looks for updates. That check is why the game sometimes refuses to open in airplane mode even though you only wanted a friendly against the computer. The console versions are more relaxed. The phone version is not, so your whole offline plan has to work around that one moment at startup. Our main eFootball offline guide covers console and PC too if you play on more than one device.
The setup, step by step
- Install the official app. Google Play on Android, the App Store on iPhone. It is free. If the listing does not say Konami, it is not the real game.
- Open it online and finish the tutorial. The tutorial is short and it teaches the swipe and button controls, so it is not wasted time.
- Let every update finish. The game downloads extra data in the background: teams, kits, commentary files. Watch for the download icon and do not close the app until it is gone. A half-finished update is the number one reason offline play breaks.
- Start an Exhibition match online once. Pick any two teams and kick off. You can quit after a minute. This confirms the offline mode's files are fully on your phone.
- Test airplane mode at home. Turn it on, reopen the game, and go to Exhibition. Testing at home, with Wi-Fi one tap away, beats testing at 30,000 feet.
- Learn the reconnect trick. If the app stops at the server check, turn airplane mode off for a few seconds, let the game reach the main menu, then turn airplane mode back on and head into Exhibition. The check happens once at startup, not during matches.
What you can play once you are in
Exhibition gives you the licensed club and national teams against the computer, at any difficulty from Beginner to Legend. Training mode works too, so you can practise free kicks and penalties in peace. What you cannot touch offline is anything with your name on it: Dream Team, the eFootball League, events and online matches all wait for the server. Think of your phone as carrying two games. The online one is your career. The offline one is a kickabout, and a good one.
Mistakes that ruin offline sessions
The classic one is updating the game the night before a trip and never opening it afterwards. Big updates often need a first launch online to unpack and verify, and if that launch happens on the plane, you are stuck. Open the game after every update, always. The second mistake is clearing the app's cache to free space right before travelling. That can delete downloaded data the offline mode needs. Free your space some other week. Third: do not sign out of your account before a trip. Signing back in needs the server.
Battery and data notes
An offline match uses no data at all, which is the whole point. It does use battery, roughly what any 3D game uses, so a full match at high brightness will take a visible bite out of a small phone. Lower the graphics setting in the game's options before a long trip. You lose a little shine on the pitch and gain a lot of playing time. The settings that matter most for smooth offline games are covered in our post on Exhibition and Trial Match settings.
And skip the offline APK
At some point in your search you will be offered a special offline version of the game as a file to install. Do not. There is no official one, and we explain the risks in our offline APK warning post. Ten minutes of setup on the real app gets you the same matches with none of the risk. That trade is not close.
Set it up tonight while the Wi-Fi is good: install, tutorial, updates, one Exhibition match, airplane-mode test. After that, your next flight, train ride or data dead zone comes with a full football game in your pocket.
